ARTS THREAD was out in force last night to support one of our favourite charities, FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct). This catwalk show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout was the culmination of the Fashion Futures 2 workshops – one of many projects run by FAD, with the intention of inspiring, motivating and building confidence in young people through fashion.

The show was a joyful celebration of the achievements of 23 young finalists – participants from sixth forms and further education colleges in London and Manchester. Amazingly, the creative pieces on show were, for many, the result of a first experience of designing and making clothes.
Scooping the overall prize was Katerina Drury from Prendergast Hilly Fields College, Lewisham. Presented by Vauxhall Fashion Scout Director, Martyn Roberts, who said, “We are proud to be involved and very happy to support the work of FAD”.

There were a number of other awards also handed out. Egle Zepkinaite from City & Islington College won the award given for research skills while Lily Harriman from Camden School for Girls won the pattern cutting award. Miriam Mwangi from New Vic Sixth Form College, Newham scooped the award for outstanding creativity, much to the delight of her supportive family and friends in the audience. Finally, a special award was given to hugely talented young illustrator, Lizzie Prince from Pendleton College in Salford, who wowed the judges with her lovely, accomplished work.

The reception, held before the catwalk show, gave guests the chance to view some of the design and illustration work created by the young people. Selected from 130 young people who attended the Fashion Futures 2 workshops earlier this year, the finalists spent 5 days at a summer school at Central Saint Martins. Here they were helped to cut a pattern and make their outfit, supported by a team of tutors, technicians and student mentors.

It was undoubtedly been a wonderful opportunity for the finalists, giving them a real insight into the fashion industry, with the addition of ‘behind the scenes’ visits to retailers River Island and John Lewis, fashion trend and information service, WGSN and Vauxhall Fashion Scout.
The colleges and school taking part the final were BSix College, Camden School for Girls, City & Islington College, Clapton Girl’s Technology College, Crossways Academy, Hampstead School, Lewisham College, Newham College, NewVic 6th Form College, Pendleton College, Pimlico Academy, Prendergast Hilly Fields College, Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls, St Angela’s & St Bonaventure’s, St Francis Xavier College, The Charter Sixth Form.
