Friday kicked off with a BFC reception for the exhibition Hedonism – devoted to hats and curated by Stephen Jones. Artistic direction by Michael Howells saw soft grey rococo cameos decorating the walls and a monochromatic display of hat boxes and teacups Mad-Hatter style.
Five milliners were chosen – J. Smith Esquire whose collection entitled Light is inspired by driftwood and seafaring, featuring rope, plywood and string. Noel Stewart’s theme for next spring is Deauville elegance meets 80s glamour – we loved the brightly-coloured mussel shell hats and the glossy black spiky bonnets.

Soren Bach creates delicate fur pieces, while Little Shilpa is the work of Mumbai-based designer (London-trained) Shilpa Chavan – one-off dramatic pieces that have their parts sourced from flea markets and vintage stores across India. Piers Atkinson reworks pop culture for hats sprouting neon-lit Mickey mouse ears, and a collection inspired by 80s kitsch featuring cherries, lips, Barbie and bananas.
