Beatrice Newman and her collection, Silent We Shout
Words: Joyce Thornton
ARTS THREAD salutes the inaugural Silent We Shout showcase recently staged by Michael Travers and Jonathan Matthey. Held from September 11 to 13 at the Old Truman Brewery, London, this platform for selected fashion graduates provided a welcome opportunity for the young designers. Supported by UK fashion chain Warehouse, participants were able to show and sell their work to press, buyers and the public. The showcase was a small but diverse selection – with clothes ranging from commercial to cutting edge.
Beatrice Newman’s stand created quite a buzz, and she undoubtedly deserves this further exposure. She recently won the prestigious Hand and Lock Embroidery Prize, following her graduation from De Montfort University. Her distinctive and decorative hard-edged glamour has a perfect rock chic vibe.

Ruth Green's graduate collection 2009
Centre stage at the event was the work of talented knitwear designer Ruth Green, chosen by Warehouse to produce a mini-collection for them which will be available in store and on-line soon. (Ravensbourne graduate Ruth’s work is already featured in our graduate knitwear round-up in ART THREAD’s latest magazine issue 2.

Grace Maran and her collection, Silent We Shout
Showcasing her colourful and inventive menswear collection, we spoke to designer Grace Maran, who had travelled from her base in Scotland to make the most of this valuable exposure in London. Maran graduated in June with a first class degree from Heriot Watt University.
Manjit Sangha, Silent We Shout
The event was also welcomed by Manjit Sangha who was showing his latest collection of highly commercial, graphic T shirts and accessories. Manjit graduated in 2006 and worked for a few years in the industry in merchandising. However, the pull of his first love for design made him eventually decide to strike out on his own.

Rachael Barrett, Silent We Shout
Also – in great contrast, the showcase offered another chance to see the wonderful cutting-edge work of recent RCA graduate Rachael Barrett. Rachel’s thoughtful, clever and individual approach explores new avenues for the clothes of the future.
