The New English was exhibiting its exciting new brand at 100% Design recently. The company’s portfolio collection is partly commercial and partly a collaboration with the MA Ceramic Programme at Staffordshire University.
After the steady decline in manufacture within the once buoyant Ceramic Industry in the Potteries, it is refreshing to see that creatives are fighting back and once again putting Staffordshire on the map when it comes to championing creative Ceramic Design and Manufacture.
Amongst the designs on display at 100% Design was Florian Hutter’s ‘Inkhead’ range, a celebration of the vibrant colours and symbolic imagery of the ink markings of the tattoo. Lisa Turner’s Anatomica, celebrates the human form.

Dr. Paul Bishop, an entrepreneur and self confessed innovator, heads the contemporary fine bone china company working in partnership with Staffordshire University and its incredible talent pool of designers and makers. Whilst the company is mindful of the tremendous heritage the potteries holds, it embraces new technology; its designers often drawing inspiration from shifting lifestyle and consumer trends.

Benday, Marcus Steel, The New English
Marcus Steel’s ‘Benday’, a tribute to Lichtenstein and the beauty of the humble dot and Terrie McGettigan’s ‘Crusades’, iconic imagery of the modern age.

Monica Tsang’s ‘Entomol’ range, commissioned by Liberty, was also on display and on closer inspection the range revealed the delicate pattern of insects she uses to create this beautiful design statement. The collection shows how Tsang draws her inspiration from ‘the poetry and beauty of nature’.
