Calendars, Philip Luscombe, Northumbria University, 100% Design
At the recent 100% Design, Northumbria University’s School of Design had a stand promoting new work by its Designers in Residence, as well as a selection of work by 2009 graduates on the 3D Design: Furniture and Product course.
A year into his Designer in Residence position, Philip Luscombe created for the event a calendar system that produces hand-embossed calendars using brass die parts designed by Philip himself and also include symbols for special occasions and holidays.
Alex Underwood is now in his second year as a Designer in Residence and brought to the show a brand-new product entitled Speakers and as its name suggests, is a new look at audio speakers for the home. Instead of the classic speaker box on the floor or perched on a shelf, these speakers are beautifully decorative pieces on legs. The speakers are available in two heights and can be mixed and matched within the pair. The design is currently in production and made by hand in North East England. There is a variety of wood choices, such as oak, walnut and beech, with others available custom-made with price dependent on materials.

Speakers, Alex Underwood; David Irwin; Divorce Cabinet, Alexandra Tinning
Other Designers in Residence included Alexandra Tinning with her Divorce Cabinet that lets you saw your furniture in two when you split up and David Irwin’s new prototype stacking chairs in aluminium; David brought his working process to the show, including his original work-in-progress version in wood.

Jack Bresnahan; Paul Taylor and James Churchill
Jack Bresnahan is a 2009 graduate from the product Design course at the university and for the show had brought along his Green Design pieces. One of Jack’s final year projects is a series of 9 different lids that can be added onto the top of the classic size food tin can to transfer the can into a sugar pourer, soap dispenser or vase to toothbrush holder, tea and coffee canisters, money box and desk tidy. Also from 2009 graduates, was furniture from Paul Taylor and James Churchill.
