Melted Lights, Marie Retpen; Kaspa ceiling lights, Ilsa Parry
ARTS THREAD looks back at new ceramic and glass designers from 100% Design held this autumn in London.
Marie Retpen is from Denmark and specialises in blown glass. Marie graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2008 and for this autumn’s show brought her new Melted Lights. Due to the technique applied, each light is unique in the way the folds form at the rim of the light. The light comes in black, blue or can be coloured to order.
Product Designer Ilsa Parry, who had recently taken part in the Philippe Starck Design for Life BBC television series, brought to the show her retro-style Kaspa ceiling lights that glow in the dark.

Hedgerow, Leeds Pottery, Felicity Jones
Graduating two years ago from the Ceramics BA at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, Felicity Jones has been working with Leeds Pottery to create a new range of ceramic pieces entitled Hedgerow. Handmade at the Leeds Pottery workshop that employs only ten people, the pieces have been created by hand-pressing real flowers into the mould, and the pieces are then hand-painted.

ABC, welovekaoru
welovekaoru is the designer label created by ceramic designer Karou Parry, a Central Saint Martins alumni. The range consists of modern takes on traditional English tea cups and mugs, in classic cream or white bone china – and occasionally glossy black. Delicate accents in 22 carat gold or platinum decorate handles and the outer rims.

Nautical, Pretty Ugly, welovekaoru
Hand-painted blue stripes runs around the Nautical cup and saucer, while the ABC range offers the option of personalised gift with initials. The collection is all made in England; Karou works closely with small family-run potteries in Stoke-on-Trent.

100% Design; Everyday, Emma Lacey
Emma Lacey, a Central Saint Martins ceramics graduate from 2007, brought her bone china collection as well as her hand-thown Everyday range. The soft dent in the design allows you to hug a warm drink and make an emotional connection with the rough clay and smooth glaze. They are hand-thrown using a combination of recycled porcelain and stoneware clays to give subtle grey tones and an elegantly textured finish. A version of allover glazed ‘Everyday’ mugs and small jugs have been selected by Priscilla Carluccio to be sold exclusively in her shop Few and Far, Brompton Road, London.
