For the third year running Designersblock has created a feature area for interiors 2010 in Birmingham running January 24-27. Designers, companies and manufacturers have collaborated on new projects that will be shown for the first time at the show, with new projects from Ercol, Timorous Beasties, Sitting Firm, Chris Eckersley, Puff and Flock, Lazerian, Pure Whyte, Hendzel & Hunt, Assembly Room, Thomas Forsyth, Owen Gildersleeve, Camira, Bute Fabrics, Lunchtime Cinema and more.

Artist and designer Thomas Forsyth has collaborated with graphic designer and illustrator Owen Gildersleeve. Their chest of drawers is entitled Aschenputtel, the Grimm brothers title for the classic Cinderella story. As with Cinderella, rags are turned into riches in the form of the reworking of the old chest – with secret compartments, intricate illustrations and woodcarvings, unexpected drawer mechanisms and even a drawer which transforms into a table.

The project is for Emmaus Brighton, an organisation that offer work and community for people who have become socially excluded or homeless. A large part of their work involves recycling furniture and, in addition to the chest, the designers have revamped a lamp, a chair and as well as other pieces.

Design studio Hendzel and Hunt have worked with textile collective Puff & Flock, using third partner Ercol’s designs and textiles as the inspiration for the project. The original Ercol butterfly chair has been reproduced in carbon fibre that creates a lightweight structure, which is then wrapped in Ercol’s best selling fabric printed with designs by Jenny and Melissa of Puff & Flock.
