From an original 500 entries, 16 finalists recently displayed their working prototypes at this year’s interiors 2010 at the NEC, Birmingham. The competition, organised and sponsored by The Lighting Association is also sponsored by a number of established names in the industry including, OSRAM, ACID (Anti Copying In Design), Philips, Total Lighting Magazine, DAR Lighting Group and the Energy Saving Trust.
The Awards categories were Student Lighting Designer of the Year, Philips Award for Best Flatwork, Highly Commended and a new category introduced for the 2009 awards, sponsored by Spearmark International, Children’s Student Lighting Designer 2009.
Beth Jackson, from Edinburgh College of Art picked up the Award for Student Lighting Designer 2009 with her ‘Air’ LED design, made from aluminium and opal acrylic. The winner of the Children’s Student Lighting Designer 2009 was Coventry University’s Faye Whitear with ‘Nuno’, made from Hytrel and silicone and again using LED lighting.

Stimuli Light 3.0, Chris Natt; Poised, Fergus Taylor
Chris Natt, a Brunel University Industrial Design & Technology graduate shone, picking up two awards; second in the Children’s Lighting category and a Philips Award for demonstrating the best use of a modern light source. Third place was awarded to Fergus Taylor, a Contemporary Furniture and Related Product Design graduate from Buckinghamshire New University for his polypropylene ‘Poised’ compact fluorescent light.

Tom, Dick & Harry, Catherine Gibbins; Floating Work Lamp, Bo Liang
Catherine Gibbins, Furniture and Product Design Graduate from Nottingham Trent University showed off her talent, picking up two awards, Best Flatwork and the Philips award alongside Chris Natt. Gibbins uses LED lighting, using high impact polystyrene to create the impressive trio, ‘Tom, Dick & Harry’. Bo Liang’s highly commended floating submission gives a new take on the work lamp. Liang, an Industrial Design Masters graduate from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design used chrome, rubber and plastic with an LED light source.

No. 8, Christiana Ionescu; Hub, James Griffiths
In addition two other graduates were also highly commended for their hard work, Christiana Ionescu from Buckinghamshire New University and James Griffiths from Aston University.
The Lighting Association encourages entry by offering an opportunity to develop a career within the lighting industry, organise for the winners’ design to go into final production and then to be sold by a national lighting retailer throughout the UK. ACID also offer The Student Lighting Designer of the Year, plus 2nd and 3rd places free membership of ACID for one year.
Philips Electronics UK will be the main sponsor for this year’s 2010 competition. Only designs containing energy efficient light sources/technologies are considered. The deadline for entry for 2010 was 23rd December 2009, prototypes of the selected finalists will be judged in July this year and then the winning designs will be exhibited in January 2011 at The Interiors Event, NEC, Birmingham.
The Lighting Association are also one of the sponsors for this year’s Society of Light & Lighting (SLL) Young Lighter of the Year Award to be announced during the late night opening of The ARC Show at Earls Court on 3rd February 2010.
