Everyday Growing book cover; Potato Music Box
Currently showing at design gallery and shop Coming Soon Arnhem is the work of ArtEZ Academy Arnhem Product Design graduate Juliette Warmenhoven – a project entitled Everyday Growing that looks at the beauty hidden in small everyday items in nature.
The work has come together as objects and as a book, which Juliette has made into a film – soon to be available to be viewed from her website. Examples from the project include the Potato Music Box – a musical instrument ‘to make visible the hidden beauty of the potato’ and Couverse that ‘takes care of the child in the incubator.’

Juliette explains: ‘In my work I emphasise the very small everyday things that get little attention because they often are considered to be too ordinary and common. This is also the case with living plants in the home.
Some time ago I observed that the living growth is often seen as something which is easily replaced by a plastic imitation version. Whereas for me, this doesn’t apply to living plants and the real meaning of them. Seeing them growing and considering the transience of them and being witness to their daily development, and the spontaneous things that happen. Such as new buds that appear like little pearls at dawn. Or a climbing plant which is lithe enough to pirouette around thin wires and turn day after day.’

‘Besides the development of nature itself, I also show the manipulated side. Creating a fusion of nature and culture that shows us that the borderline between nature and culture is hard to draw. The wonder I feel for the diversity of growth and the its transience, I displayed by means of a collection of exhibition objects and book of photographs completely produced by myself, containing poetic stories. I like to take people away from my dreams and leave space to our own interpretations, memories and humour.’
Everyday Growing continues until February 20 2010. Coming Soon Arnhem is a platform for showing and selling work of creative graduates and designers and is an initiative of the ArtEZ Academy Arnhem with support from local and regional government.
