The Photographers’ Gallery holds an annual exhibition of photography by UK graduate and postgraduate students who have completed their studies in the past year. This year’s exhibition starts May 14 2010.

For Özant Kamaci the series Pause ‘depicts the juxtaposition of powerful machines which are symbols of advancement and technology against nature which is widely accepted as precious and untouched…Planes behind trees as individual objects are familiar and common, but when combined and interrelated, the viewer moves to a new space to behold the unexpected.’ Özant, originally from Turkey, graduated in MA Communication Design (photography pathway) from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.

In Charlotte Rea’s Lancer Village from the Jump! …work in progress series miniature sets revolve around the theme of traditional English rural life, racing and hunting. Charlotte graduated with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art.

Steven Barritt’s Anachronisms are a series of portraits shot in the style of Dutch Old Masters with carefully controlled colour and lighting.

Thi Bui graduated from Southampton Solent University in 2009 with a First Class BA Honours in Photography. Born in Vietnam, Thi’s series Here is ‘a continuation of a body of work I began with the book Our Journey, 2008. Whilst Our Journey metaphorically told the story of my family’s journey from the North of Vietnam to the UK in the early 1990s, Here is an intimate look into my family’s home and the fusion of Vietnamese and British culture.’

Naddy Photomaton (Grandmother) from Un-Possible Retour is explained by Clarisse d’Arcimoles as follows: ‘Attracted by the photograph’s ability to cross time, I looked at my family albums and re-examined familiar scenes. I pore over my snapshots intrigued by the way I presented myself to the camera, how my parents saw our family and how those choices influenced my memory. Re-staging a specific instant can take weeks of planning and several hours of shooting while the original moment happened spontaneously and without control. A memory is never static, it changes as we grow, time become a creative space of evolution. In the conparaison I unavoidably failed, we have to fail. There is no return into time.’ Classisa studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies – Photography at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.

29 photographers were chosen by a judging panel of experts and this year’s panel comprised Kitty Anderson of The Common Guild, Glasgow, artist Stephen Gill, Sean O’Hagan who writes on photography for The Observer and The Guardian Online and Brett Rogers, Director of The Photographers’ Gallery.
