The word ‘Flock’ invokes various interpretations for a Fashion and Textiles exhibition: “A profusion of birds, butterflies, beautiful textiles, and gorgeous garments, Flock showcases the talent and craftsmanship of Melbourne’s RMIT students and recent graduates as they explore the exhibition theme across a diverse range of mediums.”

It was pleasing to see a representation of millinery and accessories throughout the exhibition. Sunjit Bhatt’s origami necklace crafted from metal chain and hand made paper took our eye, as did Tammy Yeo’s witty birdcage headpiece that also appeared on the front of the exhibition programme and other exhibition promotional material.

Black and White Tiger Moth by Kristen Edmond Cleal and Gather Together by Nikolina Kucan were also stunning examples of millinery work, utilising neutral tones as well as black, cream and shimmering metallics such as bronze for a striking result.

The range of quirky dresses on display included Frankly my dear, I don’t give a flock by Vonny Pramono, Sharon Lee, Michael Abulencia and Gary Lee, alongside Jenna Goad’s fabulous Peacock Shoes.

‘Flock’ was also interpreted into print designs such as Camilla Stirling’s Peacock Plumage screenprints on silk and Tara Schnieder’s Lyre Lyre Range and Birds in the Gumnuts.

Pieces such as Little Wing celebrated the simple beauty of feathers. A culmination of work from RMIT 2nd Year BA Textile Design students, Little Wing consisted of embroidery, stitch and embellishment techniques on calico remnants.
