Last month, over 25 UK member universities and colleges of the British Fashion Council’s Colleges Council took part in a 2010 graduate preview day at London’s Royal Institute of British Architects. Up for grabs were three awards; The Drapers Awards for College Portfolio, Fashion Illustration and the WGSN Digital Presentation Award.
The aim of the day is to encourage fashion industry from retail, design, recruitment, manufacturing, sales, media, marketing and PR to view the portfolios of 2010 graduates’ work.
The Drapers College Portfolio Award was won by the University of Salford, for the best overall presentation of its students work. The university had produced a large-format hand-backed book that mixed the work of two pathways of the course, one being fashion design and the other fashion styling and image making.
The Fashion Illustration Award went to Kingston University. The illustrations are of the garments that make up the students’ final collections. As with the other awards, the work was judged by a selection panel of senior industry members, chaired by Anne Tyrrell.
Anne Tyrrell said about Kingston’s award: ‘Kingston University’s portfolio included very sensitive pencil drawings and the content was creative and innovative. It showed a complete fashion package of design talent including textile swatches and knitwear swatches, which were very complimentary to the design work and showed graduates’ individuality and creativity.’
The WGSN Digital Presentation Award went to the London College of Fashion, for a strong graphic presentation of the BA(Hons) Fashion Design Technology Womenswear graduates. Creative director is Rob Phillips and design & art direction came courtesy of Bunker Design for London College of Fashion.
Industry who came to view the portfolios included Vogue Italia, Elle Magazine, Marie Claire, Evening Standard, Max Mara, Matches, Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Browns, Topshop and Warehouse.
