O.K. Periodicals #4 Curiosities
Graphic Design Festival Breda pays a tribute to independent magazines by celebrating the Dutch O.K. Festival: the crème de la crème of independent magazines worldwide come to Arnhem, Holland each April for a three day event showcasing a visual explosion of original, shocking, über graphic, stylish and crazy magazines. During the Breda festival, which runs from May 8th until 30th, a small selection chosen from the hundred magazines is showcased at the Electron building.

As print media has had rapidly had to learn to compete with the web, regular magazines are obliged to follow strict formats. The gap that they leave behind is filled by these special magazines, which strike against the uniformity that mass media hurries along. It’s within these papers that designers, illustrators and writers still have creative freedom.
DUF magazine & website
The O.K. Festival is a project led by graphic design studio O.K. Parking, who also produce a bi-annual magazine O.K. Periodicals. Highlights at the show include DUF magazine; 300 hundred pages filled with the best things to read, do, see and experience; all beautifully illustrated and commissioned by DUF members (anyone with a genius idea can put it on the DUF blog).
GUP issue 024
The international photography magazine, GUP, from Amsterdam also remains an eye-catcher, with each issue having a specific theme, featuring every angle of photography. Whether linked to the World Press Photo exhibition, the upcoming European pop/rock festivals or the financial crisis; the GUP covers make people want to subscribe.
+Rosebud; O.K. Festival
+Rosebud is another interesting design magazine. It takes its name to a derivation from the last, mysterious word that the newspaper tycoon stammers out in Orson Welles’ film classic “Citizen Kane”. Seven issues in ten years, which all vary in size, shape and structure, have received numerous international design awards.
