The University of Northampton’s show had bags of personality with quality and variety at every turn, creating a great, enjoyable show.
Students from fashion, textiles for fashion, and accessories strutted their stuff in front of a crowd that included Susie Lau of Style Bubble, the iconic Barbara Hulaniki (Biba), designer Betty Jackson and trend-spotters The Future Lab and WGSN.
Garry James Butterfield’s exciting menswear was a highlight. His wonderful inventive fur pieces were selected by top stylist Katie Shillingford for Rankin’s Graduate Fashion Week photo-shoot. He has also recently been featured on Vogue.com and Esquire’s on-line magazine. Rugged sheepskin pieces with ragged edges and laser cut detailing are innovative and infinitely covetable. More refined jackets using smooth goat-hair are given a great twist with laser-etched patterns based on underground tunnels.
Laurell Wilding’s sexy, ruched jersey pieces included a stunning long red column dress with a central ripple feature. Leather jackets and tight trousers were also in the mix, and the look was completed with beautiful bags by fellow Northampton graduate Natalya Koval.
Jenna Peach’s sporty pieces did a great job of showcasing her vibrant, hard-edged textiles, in patterns of ragged stripes, hand-painted squiggles, bold brushstrokes and random circles. Intense purple, blue and black were shot through with aqua and zingy citrus yellow.
Alice Cleary should expect a queue to buy her pretty, fresh vintage lace pieces in cream and white, with our favourite being a sweet, button through playsuit.
Olivia Brodman went for skin-tight and sexy, and showed a confident statement using subtle print, extravagant fringing, and complemented with some fluid draping. A great, ‘diva’ look was completed with massive copper statement necklaces and sky-high heels.
James Cottle’s elegant, understated menswear calmed the mood. Easy jersey pieces were mixed with crisp shirts, soft, peg-top trousers, sheer layering and collar-less jackets for an accomplished collection.
Finally Amy Robinson’s mix of laser-cut lace, sporty cycle shorts, a biker-styled waistcoat and great, modern tailored trousers was also a hit.
