Made to Measure winners, Silver, Jamie-Lee Burlinson; Bronze, Kristie Walker; Gold, Savannah Bailey; Gold, Markus Wernitznig
The winners of the 2010 Worldskills ‘Made to Measure’ Competition, were announced following the final stage of the competition on June 13, at Northumbria University.
Marcus Wernitznig from New College Nottingham won overall, claiming a Gold medal and a work placement in Debenhams’ London-based head office. Just a shade behind Markus, but with a very high score and also awarded a Gold Medal was Savannah Bailey, also of New College Nottingham. Jamie-Lee Burlinson from Newcastle College walked off with a Silver medal, and Kristie Walker from New College Nottingham was awarded a Bronze.
The 9 finalists had been selected from the 20 who had competed in the previous phase of the UK’s Made to Measure Competition on May 15 and 16 2010. The students had all risen to the challenge of transforming their initial design work into a finished garment.
Working to a deadline in a ‘live’ situation, this unique competition, run by Worldskills UK is a great opportunity for fashion students to hone their skills, and test their organisation and time management. Added to this, all the participants confirmed that the challenge of the ‘live’ experience had a great confidence boosting effect on them.
The competition brief this year was ‘Reinventing the denim jacket’. Competitors were initially chosen based on the strength of their design and research work, submitted in March. Judges were award-winning designer, Gavin Douglas, Yvette Leaker, Technical Manager for Debenhams, and consultant Joyce Thornton.
Working to strict criteria, judges looked at the interpretation of the design sketch into the pattern, the accuracy of the pattern pieces, the clarity of the information given, the finish of the sewing and construction of the final garment, and its final overall appeal.
Further opportunities may now unfold for the winners, as they could now secure additional training with Victoria Mawhinney, fashion technical expert for UK Skills, and ultimately have the chance to participate in further competitions, such as Euroskills. This year’s competition was organised and run by UK Skills Project Manager, Katie Wentworth
