Some dream of running away to the Circus is the name of the Individuals Spring/Summer 2011 collection from Amsterdam Fashion Institute AMFI. Its theme is all about capturing the essence of lightness; the sensation of being launched from a cloud-high trapeze. Finding safety in dangerous altitudes, while leaving all inhibitions behind. For a moment every thing is possible.
So true if one remembers that only a few years ago Amsterdam Fashion Institute launched its brand Individuals for the first time. Scheduled to open a day of shows in the early afternoon, only a handful of press attended. But times have changed. July 15 2010, 18.00 hours, the main hall at the Westergasfabriek is packed. Press and celebrities quarrel for a seat on the first row. Everyone else is piled up to row six and even the stairs are filled up. A naked breast and one slip down the runway, as we would find out later – turned this into a super professional show.
Yet there is nothing odd about the huge Madonna look-alike with pinks eyes and black tears running down her cheek, at the entrance of the white catwalk, which fills everyone with anticipation. Then the music moves swiftly on and the first model sets foot from out of the smokescreen onto the runway. By the fifth model it is clear: AMFI Individuals has continued its tradition of presenting a controlled collection made with only a few fabrics and a tightly-selected colour scheme.
This time beautiful painted silk, metallic leather combined with knit, crepe cotton and various stretch fabrics ruled. The joyful pallete of dazzling white, champagne, popping pink, daring turquoise, cannon ball black and deep gold was backed up by a different tone with every change.
Furthermore all the models had slick pony tales, colourful make-up and shared the same accessories in high healed, strappy and shiny pumps, leather finger gloves (love it!) and colourful knee socks and pads with special hold-up garters. As for running away from the circus, the little silk long sleeved mini dress seemed to be flowing in the air- produced in every colour.
Most people at the show had already caught a sneak peak of the collection at the BY AMFI statement store in downtown Amsterdam five days beforehand. Earlier in June, thirty fashion students presented a magazine they produced and created here too. Odd is a contemporary magazine that focuses on the international fashion scene and is being sold in Amsterdam, New York, Sydney and Tokyo.
