Ai Kawauchi creates light as a feather jewellery made from silk organza. This was Ai’s first time at Origin and we loved her pristine white ‘pearl’ necklace and giant lampshades.
Ai Kawauchi, Origin
The designer studied jewellery in Japan and worked for a jewellery company, before coming to London to set up her own label. Ai uses traditional silk organza from the town of Kiryu, Japan, rolling the fabric around natural red or black beans before soaking it to retain the shape and also to allow the soft peach to nutmeg shades of the natural dyes from the beans to colour the fabric.
The larger pieces, such as the pearl necklace, are rolled around glass beads and the pearl necklace, in particular, has the elegance of Chanel’s feminine charm.
