Make:space is an organisation that helps promote the idea of creating and collaborating and this month they are bringing us the Co-Laboratory – an exhibition that has given participants the opportunity to work together and make a piece to show to the public, highlighting their creative talents.
Make:space’s curators Jo Davies and Haidee Drew are introducing the exhibition, as they paired up the creatives who will be showing their work at KM Studios in Shoreditch from the 15th April. The pair wanted to create an exhibition that “truly supports up and coming creatives’ through participatory projects and opportunities to develop themselves.”
Pieces from the collaborations of Helen Friel and Tim Davies, Hannah Stockham and Sarah Kelly, Rhoslyn Butler and Christopher Jarratt, plus Christopher Thompson Royds and Camilla S will include paper jewellery, product design, sculptures and illustration – all disciplines that require lots of attention to detail. A quote from John Pierpont Morgan was used as a starting point for the creators “The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.” – which had to be remembered whilst they were making their pieces, which had to be new and fully functional.
Jewellery designers Hannah Stockham and Sarah Kelly are said to be working on a light installation for the event; whereas award winning Christopher Jarratt and Rhoslyn Butler are creating a series of objects, entitled ‘Distraction Devices’. Paper craftswoman Helen Friel and 3D sculptor Tim Davies, Royal College of Art graduate Christopher Thompson Royds and Camilla S will also feature their collaborations – showing a journey of the various techniques they used to create their pieces.

All of the artists stand alone as great talents in their specific field – and through collaboration, these talents are given an opportunity to design and create something new, whilst learning a new skill from their given partner. And for RCA graduates Davies and Drew, they are able to fully support the creative talent that is growing through this collaboration process.
Make:space is running the Co-Laboratory at KM Studios in Shoreditch from 15th – 25st April 2011.
