The New Designer of the Year Award 2011 has gone to… Louise Tiler from Leeds College of Art & Design who has won amongst other things a cash prize of £1500. Inspired by 16th century Japanese and Georgian wallpapers and vintage wall panels, Louise has created layered and in depth illustrative designs in watercolour florals with hand drawn details.
Specifically chosen for the attention to detail, Louise wants to create work that makes the viewer stop and take a closer look. With fluid movement and confident drawings, each is scaled to juxtapose against the natural foliage. With animal-style trends coming through, the overall feel for Louise’s work makes for a very forward thinking collection of prints.
Jill Shaddock from Manchester School of Art MMU has already won two prizes at New Designers, the award for Habitat Innovation and The Pulse award for her project based on deconstructing the process of slip casting. Jill’s pieces in earthy tones create a sleek and modern vibe. She has designed unique objects that elevate a process normally associated with mass production into pieces such as a sushi, salad and coffee sets for an ideal contemporary home.
New Designers Part 1 continues until July 02 and Part 2 takes place July 06-90 2011 at Business Design Centre, London.
