Camberwell College of Arts MA Show: Designer Maker
Furniture, Jewellery, Lighting

Arpan Patel

Camberwell’s MA Designer Maker graduate work was another highlight of the MA Show which opened last week. ARTS THREAD was particularly wowed by Arpan Patel’s range of furniture, inspired by the traditions of Indian marriage.

Having been exposed to many different traditional crafts during his upbringing in Jaipur, India, Arpan explores possibilities for these ancient crafts in the contemporary world. The form of the dining table and the weaving patterns of the chairs are inspired by the folds and patterns of turbans, while the exquisite Henna pattern on the table reflects that applied to the hands of the brides, as in Indian tradition.

Chieh-Ting Huang

Chieh-Ting Huang’s ‘The P Objects’ is a collection of striking paper and wood lanterns drawing on the different traditions of lighting from both the East and West. The coloured structures, lit from within, combine the structural, industrial elements of Occidental lanterns, with the more delicate, portable style of those from the East. They are also intended to remind us of the prehistoric human ability to control and utilise fire as light, and the concept of protecting light – both ideas that are easily overlooked in the modern world, where light is taken for granted.

Ashley Heminway

Ashley Heminway’s portfolio of narrative jewellery, keepsakes and framed objects retells the story of his family tree, reflecting the professions and trades of his ancestors. Bringing together mundane objects that represent these professions – including carpentry, printing and upholstery – with old family photographs, printed memorabilia and tools, the collection has an intriguing and appealing vintage aesthetic.
