22 contemporary designers and makers from the North of England come together for Design Event MART, the flagship exhibition of the Design Event festival. The designers selected come from a broad range of disciplines with jewellery, furniture and unique interior and exterior products on display. The amount of talent on show was overwhelming but we did manage to whittle it down to a few favourites to share with you!
Nature and the great outdoors were the main source of inspiration for many of the designers who are exhibiting at MART. Ouseburn based designer Jamie Josef Fry is displaying his tree-like bookshelves, Julia Jacobs is presenting her very modernist Bauhaus Birdfeeder designs and Superfauna are showing their easily recognisable cardboard trophy heads.
Internationally acclaimed designer Susan Bradley is showing pieces from both her ‘London Transport Bookends’ and ‘Shelf Life’ collections. We love the simple, graphic style of Susan’s designs which are created from intricately cut metal.
Even more animals can be found in the exhibition thanks to Lazerian and Psalt Design. Lazerian turn man’s best friend into a wonderful paper model while Psalt defy gravity with their fish tank design which rests precariously on the edge of a table or surface.
Anne Laycock’s big, bulky designs are another must-see at MART. Anne explores each material’s unique qualities during the design process and responds to them in a way which is unique and architectural. Ellen Thomas has created some lovely hand-crafted wall and mantle clocks made from North American oak and collaborative team Nick James and Bridget Jones have brought their collection of 1950′s style furniture to the show also.
