Dutch Design Week 2011: Studio Erik Stehmann

Studio Erik Stehmann exhibition/ 'Blocks' collection/ 'Dog' scratchpost for cats

It’s incredible what Erik Stehmann has achieved in the 2 years since he graduated from the ArtEz Institute of the Arts in Arnhem. The up-and-coming product designer has won the IHM Talente 2010 International Design Competition, gained nominations for a Dutch Design Award and has exhibited his work across Europe. For Dutch Design Week, Erik is currently displaying three new collections alongside his 2009 ‘Inflating Lights’ at the Schellensfactory in Eindhoven.

The first of Erik’s new 2011 collections is a set of furniture made entirely from wooden blocks. To create his collection, Erik cut a large wooden beam into hundreds of small pieces before gluing them back together to form tables, chairs and even desk lamps. To glue all the pieces together must be terribly time consuming – particularly when creating the desk which consists of precisely 1,296 blocks in total!

'Inflating Lights'/ ':O Chair'

Cat lovers (and dog haters) will no doubt love Erik’s amusing idea for a unique scratching post for man’s feline companion. The dog-shaped scratching post is a great way to not only save your furniture from being scratched by your pets, but also gives cats the opportunity to take out their aggression on their natural enemy! Erik’s sense of humour is continued in the design for his new ‘:O Chair’, a standard canteen chair with a wide-mouthed face cut into the back rest. Simple – but highly effective!

Dutch Design Week runs from October 22 to 30 2011.
