The Department is home to exceptional lettering, printing and graphic design collections, including the famous Isotype Collection, recently showcased at the V&A. The Isotype ‘Picture dictionary’ is a working reference file of all pictograms designed by Gerd Arntz. Its basic elements are pictograms, simplified pictures of people or things, graphically arranged to illustrate and help explain social and economic issues.
