In just over a week, ARTS THREAD will be heading to Paris for Who’s Next Prêt-à-Porter. Joining us will be San Francisco Academy of Art University graduate Di Wu. Hailing from Shen Yang in the Liao Ning province of China, this fashion designer has already exhibited her graduate collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. We had a chat with Di Wu to find out more about the work she’ll be showing at Who’s Next:
ARTS THREAD: Tell us about the collection you are showing at Who’s Next?
Di Wu: I will show my graduate Fall&Winter collection at Who’s Next. I spent 6 months in total creating this collection from searching for inspiration through to the final stitches. I used different colors, fabrics, and zippers to create the different geometric patterns found throughout the garments. I thought a lot about how to balance patterns on the human body and create an aesthetic which is interesting and modern.
AT: Can you tell us about the different stylistic and cultural influences that inspire you?
DW: I was inspired by the work of printmaker Aaron Coleman as well as architecture and interior design.
AT: What fabrics do you use?
DW: My main fabric is wool but I also use silk and cashmere, as I love high-end, luxurious materials. The fabrics are sourced from the US and Europe.
AT: What do you hope to gain from exhibiting at Who’s Next?
DW: I am so glad to get this opportunity to join this exhibition in Paris. I hope that more people will become aware of my designs and see my collection and I’m eager to see what the other designers will be showing. I believe we’ll learn a lot from each other and become even more inspired while in France.
WHO’S NEXT Prêt-à-Porter Paris will run from 30 June – 3 July at Porte de Versailles Paris. For more information, visit the Who’s Next website.
