The winners of this year’s GoodWeave Design Competition, co-sponsored by Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround, have been announced.
First year Textile Innovation and Design student Silvia Civati from Loughborough University took home the top prize for her interpretation of the 2012 competition brief.
Civati drew inspiration from the iconic Egg chair using a simple line drawing of the chair’s silhouette, layered in a successive pattern similar to a Spirograph.
‘I started my research exploring the world of rugs,’ explains Civati. ‘I then focused on the fashion of the 60’s and 70’s, taking inspiration from colours and motives. I broadened my research into furniture of that era, which is really innovative and characterised by clean lines. I combined the fashion motives with the outlines of the chairs to obtain my patterns.”
Civati’s winning design will be put into production and sold through Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround from September.
The judging panel awarded fellow Loughborough University student Hanna Remiarz with the second place prize for her very Mod inspired design.
‘I took time to visit a motorcycle museum, which inspired my drawings,’ says Remiarz. ‘After producing a body of work I used Photoshop to manipulate my drawings which then helped to produce my final design.’
