Giles Miller at Kingly Court pop-up shop
Words: Joyce Thornton
Arts Thread joined young product designer Giles Miller and friends at the opening of his new ‘pop-up shop’ at Kingly Court on London’s Carnaby Street last night. Miller has wasted no time since graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in June. As well as showcasing his own work, this venture is his first foray into pulling together work of other designers, creating a vibrant, quirky interior space.
Giles is already well known for his extensive and imaginative range of cardboard products, but also on show is some more recent work. This explores other materials and new concepts of re-using and transforming existing possessions – most effectively seen in his ‘Naked Lego’ table.

Giles’ design ethos has always had a strong element of sustainability. He is dismayed at the plethora of “unviable products that only serve to consume resources and retire swiftly as landfill”. He decided to include the work of other young talents whose work, he feels “show a distinct quality through their material composition, considered concept and realisation, or simply through their undeniable beauty as objects”.

Giles has created an interior at Kingly Court that manages to convey a contemporary yet warm atmosphere. Echoes of faded grandeur are added from Claire Lovett’s lovely decorative ceramic wall pieces with their ‘peeling wallpaper’ layers. These complemented Miller’s cardboard ‘grandfather clock’ and chest of drawers really well. The mix is further enhanced by Abigail Borg’s colourful and complex floral wallpapers. Also on show is some great work from Julian Bond, Jon Harrison, Felix De Pass and Claire Ferreira. Highly recommended – catch it while you can!
