Nature in Design is an exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through nature objectified by Icelandic designers and offers insight into the underlying ideas behind the products. Nature in Design is a collaborative project of the Iceland Design Centre and Landsvirkjun and is open daily until 28th August 2010.
Assemble, the first UK Crafts Council Conference took place at LSO St Luke’s, Old St, London on Tuesday 22nd June. Delegates engaged and interested in craft, (including over 200 makers) gathered to hear the views of inspirational speakers on the value and importance of craft in the 21st Century.
BDC Award Winner Lucy Foakes, University College Falmouth
Last night saw the winners announced for New Designers Part 1. Held at Islington Business Centre, the show celebrates 25 years this edition. The Business Design Centre (BDC) Award went to Lucy Foakes from University College Falmouth for her Contemporary Canopics. Inspired by ancient Egyptian jars, Lucy has updated them in slip cast and coiled ceramic with laser-cut acrylic. Hand-painted modern icons decorate the vessels, and appear as colourful figurative protectors to guard its contents.
Inspired by the folk event of the Cene di San Giuseppe in Sicily with its hand-crafted bread displays, Autarky is a new installation by Formafantasma, a young design studio of two Italian designers Andrea Tremarchi and Simone Farresin, who both graduated in 2009 from the Design Academy Eindhoven. The exhibition is on show at Spazio Rossana Orlandi in Milan during Salone del Mobile, 14-19 April 2010.

The Honey Bee and the Hive brings together the work of 28 designers who have all responded to the brief set by guest curator Wendy Ramshaw CBE RDI on the subject of the Honey Bee and the Hive. Wendy notes that ‘Bees, it is said, are the most studied creatures on the planet after man.’
Belgian art centre Z33’s new exhibition Design by Performance explores performative trends in contemporary design. The focus of the exhibition is not on finished products, but on the production process itself where the project dictates that the object will always be changing or else has been formed by its surroundings or the specific situation it is placed in.

This March sees a selection of upcoming designers playing with the theme of living in London showcased at Craft Central’s new exhibition that covers jellewery, silversmithing, textiles, illustration, ceramics, interiors and even passementerie.
The exhibition Dead or Alive is presented by the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) from April 27 through to October 24, 2010 and will showcase the work of over 30 international artists and designers who transform organic materials and objects that were once produced by or part of living organisms, such as insects, feathers, bones, silkworm cocoons, plant materials and hair, into intricately crafted installations and sculptures.
Gallery Libby Sellers presents Tidal Ossuary, new work by Julia Lohmann and Gero Grundmann based on the re-evaluation of the 19th century discarded bones discovered along the river Thames. The series is an open edition of mixed materials including polished bone, silver, resin and stainless steel.
Two minutes from London’s Kings Cross station sees London’s coolest Christmas pop-up shop, Kristie & Coralie’s Drink, Shop & Do. Only open til the 20th December over three Thursday-Sunday long weekends, pick up gifts from upcoming designers, take part in craft workshops and most important – enjoy the splendid tea, homemade cakes and wonderfully retro cocktails.
This October’s edition of Origin, held at Somerset House, saw the Crafts Council focus on the theme of contemporary basket making and makers. The Crafting Space interactive display entitled ‘Hybrid Basketry’ was designed by artist Shane Waltener. Students from London’s City Lit Creative Basketry course and Camberwell College of Art’s 3D Design BA (Hons) course were on hand to help visitors to de-construct commonly-found domestic basketry objects, and re-weave them to create new forms and shapes.
