ARTS THREAD looks back at new ceramic and glass designers from 100% Design held this autumn in London.

Marie Retpen is from Denmark and specialises in blown glass. Marie graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2008 and for this autumn’s show brought her new Melted Lights. Due to the technique applied, each light is unique in the way the folds form at the rim of the light. The light comes in black, blue or can be coloured to order.

Amy Long at RugMark Rehabilitation Centre, Nepal; The Beat of the East moodboard


RugMark brought the winners of its annual Rug Design competition to 100% Design again this year. The winner, Amy Long, a Textile Design student from Loughborough University, created an abstract geometric pattern in graduated purple and blue tones. The competition sets out to inspire the creative talents of young designers and to raise awareness among design students of the child labour issues within the rug industry.

The 2010 competition brief is set to be announced next month and we will be posting it onto the ARTS THREAD competition section as soon as it arrives.

As part of the recent London Design Festival, the upmarket lifestyle store Few and Far presented a limited edition collection of hand-produced ceramic pieces produced by 2nd year Central Saint Martins ceramic students. Entitled ‘The Family,’ the five vessels are sold exclusively through the South Kensington store.

Graduating in 2009 with first class honours in 3D Design: Furniture and Product from Northumbria University, Robin Grasby aims to create rational, enduring, functional furniture for mass production.

ARTS THREAD was drawn to the great mix of simplicity and quirkiness of design company Boex. Based in Cornwall and run by twin brothers Sam and Will Boex, their Pencil Bench from 2007 still looks fresh and fun – rightly drawing stacks of praise and being featured widely in the design press. Their new products include their beautiful ‘Easy Willow’ chair, and the ‘Turn Stool’ which mixes a warm traditionally turned ash seat with cool powder coated steel legs.

The Wallpaper* Chair Arch can be found in the gardens of the V&A museum during the London Design Festival (September 19-27). Designed by Martin Gamper using Ercol chairs, the arch is a modern take on the tradition of improvised public sculpture popular in the Victorian era, where local materials were used to create an arch celebrating local industry.

ARTS THREAD was in Clapham on Saturday to check out the ‘Come across Stitch’ intervention – popping in to the Papered Parlour, for a welcome cup of tea and a rather fabulous cake.
Artist Hannah Hull was out and about creating a stir in the outdoor environment – we spotted her giant bunting adorning a building on The Pavement in near Clapham Common. With the sun shining, the cheery vibe continued inside the Papered Parlour where selected artists, illustrators and craftspeople were showing and selling their work.

Arts Thread joined young product designer Giles Miller and friends at the opening of his new ‘pop-up shop’ at Kingly Court on London’s Carnaby Street last night. Miller has wasted no time since graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in June. As well as showcasing his own work, this venture is his first foray into pulling together work of other designers, creating a vibrant, quirky interior space.
