La Publicité au secours des grandes causes – Advertising coming to the help of worthy causes – at Paris’s Les Arts Décoratifs shows a major collection of posters and films made for French NGOs and institutions to get across their messages.

The 300 posters and films in this exhibition show how how advertising has helped raise and shape public awareness, from the late 60s through to today. The exhibition covers six major themes: human rights, humanitarian aid, ecology, health, social exclusion and social aid, education and civic awareness.

In the 1860s and 1870s, long before the embrace of collage techniques by avant-garde artists of the early 20th century, aristocratic Victorian women were experimenting with photocollage. Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage, opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York early February 2010, is the first exhibition to study these works.

Pressing the buzzer at number 3 Jubilee Place, the outside of the Michael Hoppen Gallery gives no clues to the treasures that lay within. As the latch of the white glass panelled door opens and I step inside, frame upon frame of media credits and citations tell me this is a gallery like no other. Rising up a creaking wooden staircase to the first floor of the newly open Ellen Von Unwerth exhibition entitled ‘Fräulein’, I am greeted by a large antique clock and the most gorgeous image of a corseted women climbing a flight of stairs.
