ARTS THREAD takes a look at some of the highlights from the Slow Design exhibition at Budapest Design Week.

Today marks the start of this year’s Budapest Design Week. Held in the Hungarian capital between the 28th September and 7th October, the event offers over a hundred programs highlighting local and international designers.

When Lauren Bowker told us some while ago of a top secret project for Paris Fashion Week and it involved lots and lots of hours working with light and feathers -we were intrigued! Now we can see the results, three marvellous head-dresses for Paris-based Peachoo + Krejberg.

The first collection of commercial products from the Royal College of Art, London’s Design Products course was brought ‘up North’ and showcased at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. All the pieces in the collection were selected by course leaders Tord Boontje and Gareth Williams and were created by recent graduates and members of the faculty, with some pieces created in partnership with El Ultimo Grito.

The Designers Marketplace at The Holy Biscuit, Newcastle took place this weekend as part of the city’s Design Event festival. The Marketplace has been running for three years with the aim to support and promote creative entrepreneurs working in the North of England.

22 contemporary designers and makers from the North of England come together for Design Event MART, the flagship exhibition of the Design Event festival. The designers selected come from a broad range of disciplines with jewellery, furniture and unique interior and exterior products on display. The amount of talent on show was overwhelming but we did manage to whittle it down to a few favourites to share with you!

Design Event Presents is a new initiative launched as part of this year’s Design Event MART exhibition. For Presents, 8 creatives from the realms of product, jewellery, illustration and textile design have been commissioned to produce an exclusive edition of a new product to be premiered at the opening of the festival.

The 2011 Design Event MART Awards were held at the opening of Newcastle’s 4 day cultural festival last night. The winners will be displaying their designs alongside the work of 19 other designers and makers as part of the MART exhibition held in the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Motion Graphics and Animation students from Northumbria University School of Design give Design Event goers an insight into the complex development work which goes into their final pieces at ‘Ante-Animate’.

Showcasing and promoting design in the North of England, Design Event kicks off in two weeks time, running October 14-18 2011. ARTS THREAD previews the highlights.
