Ceramic highlights at Origin this year ranged from uncanny realism to shameless fantasy.

Origin, the bustling selling fair run by the Crafts Council, is a must-see on the London Design Festival calendar, offering the wares of 200 diverse designer makers. This year, it is arguably the jewellers stealing the show, with a diverse mix including established and emerging designers, traditional and cutting edge techniques, classic and playful styles…and everything in between.

As interest increases in the field of lighting design, the Crafts Council and Nokia Design present Lux Craft at Origin, a collaborative exhibition that explores the potential applications of light in design. Ten designers were chosen out of 280 applications for their originality, innovation, quality and craftsmanship, defined by Nokia Design as the ‘mastery of the design process’.

Korean craftsman Soung Chuel Park creates vessels, each one is different – all from the same copper plates of a consistent diameters and thickness. Soung references traditional Korean vessels, handling and pounding metal plates into vases, tea-light holder and decorative items.

Louise Greenfield showed at both Origin and 100% Design and was overwhelmed with interest, which is no surprise, as her feather wall panels utilise natural materials in a truly contemporary way.

This autumn was Rebecca J Coles first time as an exhibitor at Origin. Her intricately cut paper creations built up of shaped pieces fashioned into insect wings are all done by hand and explore Rebecca’s love of repetition, symmetry and collecting.

Barbara Keal is an artist and came to felt-making through her love of the local landscape around her home in Lewes, East Sussex, and in particular, Malling Hill and its herd of varied breeds of sheep. With the sheep used to keep the downland environment under control, the discarded wool wasn’t used – until Barabra approached the local shepherd.

Katie Bonham is fascinated by London Brick and the heritage behind the material that helped to build many of London’s landmarks, railway stations, factories and much more.

Ai Kawauchi creates light as a feather jewellery made from silk organza. This was Ai’s first time at Origin and we loved her pristine white ‘pearl’ necklace and giant lampshades.

Origin started Thursday in a new venue in the heart of London’s Spitalfield’s market. Branded in purple, a giant purple box sheltered the over 200 designers who are part of this year’s exhibition. Co-ordinating purple cubes were dotted around the market, guiding visitors to the event.
